Bosque el Nixticuil

Bosque el Nixticuil is an old-growth urban forest on the northwestern edge of the Metropolitan Zone of Guadalajara, within the municipality of Zapopan in the Mexican state of Jalisco. It is a surviving fragment of a once much larger woodland that covered more than 27,000 hectares, now reduced to roughly 1,860 hectares of which 1,591 have been formally declared a municipal protected area for watershed protection. The forest is dominated by oak, holm oak, and pine, with a diverse understory of shrubs, herbs, and other trees such as willow, amate fig, and native acacias. It sits within a landscape shaped by the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt, where Pleistocene rhyolitic domes and pyroclastic deposits set the stage for plains, shallow canyons, and rolling hills that drain into the Río Blanco watershed. Bosque el Nixticuil has also become a notable example of urban conservation struggle in Mexico. Community groups and environmental organizations, including the Comité Salvabosque de El Nixticuil and Comité Salvabosque Tigre II, have organized to protect the forest from urban development, illegal logging, and wildfires. The forest's protected status, won through years of protest and negotiation, underscores its role as a vital ecological island within one of Mexico's largest metropolitan regions.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
