Cap Island Conservation Park

Cap Island Conservation Park is a small but ecologically significant protected offshore island in South Australia, lying roughly 7.5 kilometres off the west coast of the Eyre Peninsula near Mount Misery. The park covers a modest granite-based island with a calcarenite mantle, the margins of which are steeply overhanging and heavily eroded by marine conditions. The reserve was first proclaimed in 1967 as a Fauna Conservation Reserve and later formally gazetted as Cap Island Conservation Park in 1972. Its purpose is to protect an important seabird breeding area and the haul-out sites regularly used by Australian sea lions and New Zealand fur seals, making it a compact but valuable stronghold for marine and island biodiversity on the southern Eyre coastline. Despite its size, the island carries a distinct ecological identity shaped by exposure, salt spray, and seabird-influenced nutrient cycles. A low shrubland dominated by nitre bush anchors the vegetation, while the surrounding cliffs, ledges, and waters support nesting seabirds and visiting marine mammals typical of the region's offshore islands.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
