Cordillera Huayhuash Reserved Zone

The Cordillera Huayhuash Reserved Zone is a protected area in central Peru that safeguards a spectacular section of the Cordillera Huayhuash, one of the most dramatic mountain ranges in the Andes. It lies across the regions of Ancash, Huánuco, and Lima, straddling the high cordillera that separates the Pacific drainage from the Amazon basin. The reserve’s landscape is defined by a tight arc of snow-clad summits, high-altitude plateaus, and turquoise glacial lakes fed by the range’s ice fields. Twenty-one peaks rise within or directly above the protected area, including Yerupajá, the second-highest mountain in Peru, giving the zone a vertical scale that few Andean protected areas can match. Because the cordillera feeds rivers flowing in two directions, the Pativilca and Huaura toward the Pacific, and tributaries of the Marañón toward the Atlantic, the reserve acts as a critical water tower for much of Peru. Its establishment reflects a recognition that the integrity of these glaciers, lakes, and highland ecosystems carries ecological importance well beyond the range itself.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
