Davis Scrub Nature Reserve

Davis Scrub Nature Reserve is a small protected nature reserve in the Northern Rivers region of New South Wales, Australia, located near the town of Alstonville. Covering only about 13 hectares, it preserves a surviving fragment of the once vast sub-tropical rainforest that made up the Big Scrub, a lowland rainforest ecosystem that has been almost entirely cleared for agriculture since European settlement. The reserve sits on an undulating high-rainfall plain at roughly 170 metres above sea level, with soils derived from ancient basaltic flows that originated from the nearby Mount Warning volcanic complex. Although its size is modest, Davis Scrub holds strong botanical and conservation significance. It shelters a characteristic mix of sub-tropical rainforest trees, including Moreton Bay fig, black bean, white booyong, red bean, and purple cherry, with a large Moreton Bay fig dominating the canopy. As a surviving fragment of a much larger ecosystem, the reserve offers insight into the original character of the Big Scrub lowland rainforests and represents an important refuge for the plant communities that once defined this part of north-eastern New South Wales. The reserve is managed as a habitat and species management area, classified under IUCN Category IV. It is a quiet but ecologically meaningful site that complements other remnants of the Big Scrub and contributes to the broader effort to preserve what remains of one of Australia's most historically extensive sub-tropical lowland rainforests.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate
