Dingel und Eberschützer Klippen

Dingel und Eberschützer Klippen is a combined nature reserve, landscape protection area, and European Natura 2000 (FFH) site located in northern Hesse, Germany, north of the town of Hofgeismar in the Landkreis Kassel. The protected landscape sits within the Naturpark Reinhardswald, a region defined by rolling upland forests, open plateaus, and the deep Diemel river valley. The area is best understood as a mosaic of near-natural deciduous woodland and species-rich calcareous semi-dry grassland (Kalkhalbtrockenrasen) developed over limestone substrate, making it a regionally significant refuge for orchid-rich habitats in central Germany. The site is particularly valued for its orchid-rich beech forests and its south-facing limestone slopes, where centuries of traditional grazing once maintained open meadow communities. After grazing was abandoned in the mid-twentieth century, the open habitats began to scrub over and were partly replanted with spruce; reserve management has since restored many of these areas through clearing and reintroduced grazing. Today, the protected area stands out for combining large blocks of diverse broadleaf forest, including woodruff and orchid beechwood communities, with conservatively managed calcareous grassland rich in wildflowers, butterflies, and reptiles. Together with its bordering landscape protection area, Dingel und Eberschützer Klippen forms a compact, biologically dense landscape unit. The combination of woodland cover, open slopes, and the proximity of the Diemel valley gives the area an unusually layered ecological character for an inland, low-elevation Hessian landscape, and anchors the site's identity as a small but ecologically rich component of the Reinhardswald nature park.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
