Esteros y Algarrobales del Río Uruguay

Esteros y Algarrobales del Río Uruguay is a habitat and species management area in western Uruguay, located in the Río Negro department along the left bank of the Uruguay River. It belongs to Uruguay's National System of Natural Protected Areas (SNAP) and was established to safeguard two closely linked landscape elements: the wetland corridors known locally as esteros and the algarrobo forests of Prosopis that grow on sodic soils known as blanqueales. The protected area reflects a meeting point between two ecoregions, the Espinal and the Chaco, whose characteristic biotic elements appear in Uruguay only in a very restricted distribution. Alongside the algarrobo woodlands, the site includes coastal bañados, gallery forests, grasslands, and scrub along the river, making it ecologically richer than a single forest or wetland type alone. It also forms part of a broader regional conservation mosaic. About 41 percent of the area overlaps with the Ramsar site Esteros de Farrapos e Islas del Río Uruguay, and it lies just a few kilometers south of the Esteros de Farrapos National Park, another SNAP component. Together, these protected units form one of the most important wetland and riparian conservation corridors in the country.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
