Fort Barrington

Fort Barrington is a historic British fortification situated on Goat Hill in the village of Yeptons, on the island of Antigua in the Caribbean nation of Antigua and Barbuda. Perched at the most southwestern point of St. John's Harbour, the fort was built in 1779 to guard the harbor entrance together with Fort James on the opposite side. Today the site stands as a ruin of stone walls, a circular battery, a small powder magazine, and barracks, and remains open to visitors as one of Antigua's most photogenic colonial-era landmarks, especially when large cruise ships pass close offshore. The fort traces its origins to an earlier British battery on the same hill, constructed in the 17th century to protect the approaches to St. John's Harbour. That earlier position saw repeated attacks and was eventually abandoned after Queen Anne's War, only to be replaced by a stronger stone fort during the period of the American Revolutionary War. Over time the site has carried several names, including Goat Hill Fort, Cripplegate Battery, and Queen's Battery, before being renamed Fort Barrington in honor of Admiral Samuel Barrington, commander in chief of the Leeward Islands station.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
