Heggaton Conservation Park

Heggaton Conservation Park is a protected area in South Australia, situated on the Eyre Peninsula in the gazetted locality of Mangalo, approximately 28 kilometres south-east of the town of Kimba. The park lies within the broader semi-arid landscape that characterises much of central Eyre Peninsula, where scrub-dominated vegetation, low woodland, and open plains form a distinctive regional environment. The park is managed as an IUCN Category VI protected area, a designation that recognises its value for biodiversity conservation while allowing regulated use of natural resources. Its primary ecological importance lies in the relatively undisturbed mallee forest and woodland communities it preserves, which support species of conservation significance including the Malleefowl and several plant species listed as rare under South Australian legislation. Heggaton Conservation Park was originally dedicated as the Heggaton Conservation Reserve in 1993 and later re-proclaimed as a conservation park in 2012 to align with broader state-level frameworks for protected-area management. Together with three adjacent conservation parks, it forms part of a network of habitat that contributes meaningfully to the ecological character of the eastern Eyre Peninsula.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
