Kaiser Wilderness

Kaiser Wilderness is a federally designated wilderness area located roughly 70 miles northeast of Fresno in the central Sierra Nevada of California. Added to the National Wilderness Preservation System by the United States Congress in 1976, it spans a compact east-west ridge complex of about 22,700 acres and is managed by the U.S. Forest Service as part of the Sierra National Forest. The wilderness is often described as a miniature version of the High Sierra, with elevations rising from roughly 7,200 feet to more than 10,300 feet at Kaiser Peak. Its terrain combines glacier-scoured granite, steep cirques, alpine lakes, and coniferous forests shaped by elevation and exposure. Although small, Kaiser links a nearly continuous corridor of federally protected wild lands along the Sierra Nevada, sitting across the South Fork San Joaquin River canyon from the high country of the John Muir and Ansel Adams Wildernesses.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
