Kaw-Roura Marshland Nature Reserve

Kaw-Roura Marshland Nature Reserve is a sprawling protected wetland in French Guiana, France, representing the largest wetland ecosystem in the country and one of the most significant in the Amazon basin. Spanning approximately 94,700 hectares, the reserve stretches from the Atlantic coast inland toward the Amazonian rainforest, encompassing a remarkable diversity of habitats including floating marshlands, mangrove forests, tropical savannas, and humid tropical rainforest. The reserve is accessible exclusively by boat from the village of Kaw, which lies within the protected area itself. This unique landscape has earned the nickname the "Everglades of Guiana" due to its extensive wetlands and ecological significance. The reserve protects more than half of all protected species in French Guiana and serves as a critical refuge for numerous rare and endangered species including the black caiman, Amazonian manatee, giant otter, and jaguar.
