La Corota Island Flora Sanctuary

La Corota Island Flora Sanctuary is a compact protected area in southwestern Colombia, located on an island within Laguna de la Cocha in the Nariño department. Established on June 6, 1977, it is the smallest protected area within the Colombian National Natural Park System, covering approximately 16 hectares of land and surrounding water. The sanctuary holds the distinction of being the only lake island in Colombia that supports old-growth Andean cloud forest, making it a unique ecological preserve in the country. The island and its surrounding waters provide critical habitat for endemic subtropical cloud forest plant species, as well as diverse waterfowl, amphibians, and fish.
