Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve

The Lake Superior National Estuarine Research Reserve is a protected estuary system in the northwest corner of Wisconsin, spanning land and water areas along the St. Louis River and its confluence with Lake Superior. Designated in 2010 and now part of the nationwide National Estuarine Research Reserve System, the Reserve preserves one of the largest freshwater estuarine wetland complexes in the Lake Superior Basin. Its 16,697 acres are divided across four interconnected components near Superior, Wisconsin, including the expansive Red River Breaks, the forested Pokegama Bay area, the Pokegama-Carnegie Wetlands, and Wisconsin Point. Together these lands protect coastal shrublands, marshes, swamps, dune systems, northern coniferous forests, and the world's largest freshwater bay mouth sand bar, Wisconsin Point. Ecologically, the Reserve marks the meeting point of boreal, northern hardwoods, and Great Lakes pine forest communities, an unusual transitional zone found only in the Great Lakes region. It is also an area of long human history, with Native American cultural sites through the estuary and historic lumbering and shipping locations along its shores.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
