Lobau

The Lobau is a protected floodplain on the northern bank of the Danube, forming part of the eastern cityscape of Vienna and extending into Lower Austria. Covering roughly 22 square kilometers, it represents one of the last large remnants of the dynamic riverine landscape that once characterized the Danube corridor through the Marchfeld, north of the Austrian capital. The area combines still-water oxbow lakes, softwood and hardwood riparian forests, and extensive groundwater-fed wetlands. Since 1996, the Lobau has been part of the Danube-Auen National Park, anchoring a continuous ecological corridor along the river's left bank. It is also recognized internationally as a Ramsar Wetland site (Untere Lobau, designated in 1983) and forms part of a trilateral Ramsar network with Slovakia and the Czech Republic. Beyond its ecological value, the Lobau carries strong cultural and historical associations. It was the staging ground for Napoleon's crossing of the Danube in 1809 and the site of the Battle of Aspern, and traces of that era remain visible in the landscape and local memory. Today the area functions as a major near-city recreation zone for Vienna, accessible via a network of trails and connected to long-distance European hiking routes.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
