Lord Howe Island Marine Park

Lord Howe Island Marine Park is a state-level marine protected area in the Tasman Sea, encircling Lord Howe Island and the nearby Balls Pyramid. Established in 1999 under the NSW Marine Parks Act 1997, the park covers around 465 square kilometres of coastal waters out to three nautical miles from the island. It is managed by the New South Wales Marine Parks Authority and is recognised internationally as the southernmost true coral reef ecosystem on Earth. The park protects a remarkable blend of tropical and temperate marine life, shaped by the southerly flowing East Australian Current and the island's remote position roughly 640 kilometres northeast of Sydney. Its waters include an extensive barrier reef on the western side, a sheltered lagoon system, fringing reefs on the eastern coast, and a wide variety of reef, algal, and open ocean habitats. Together with Lord Howe Island Group's World Heritage status, this gives the marine park both national and international significance. Beyond its ecological role, the marine park represents a careful balance between protection and use. Most of the area is zoned for habitat protection that allows certain recreational and charter fishing, while seven smaller sanctuary zones restrict fishing and other harmful activities. The approach aims to conserve marine biodiversity and ecosystem processes while supporting sustainable tourism, research, and the small island community that depends on the surrounding sea.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
