Maiko National Park

Maiko National Park is a vast protected wilderness area in the eastern Democratic Republic of the Congo, covering approximately 10,885 square kilometers of pristine tropical forest. Established in 1970 through Presidential Decree, the park occupies a remote and relatively inaccessible region spanning three provincial territories: Nord Kivu, Province Orientale, and Maniema. The park forms part of the larger Ituri Rainforest ecosystem in its northern sector and contains an extensive network of river systems that drain the forested highlands. This remote location has historically presented both challenges and opportunities for conservation, as the region's isolation has allowed for the preservation of remarkable biodiversity while also creating significant management difficulties. Maiko represents one of the most significant protected areas in central Africa for maintaining viable populations of endemic species that have suffered severe declines elsewhere in their range.
