Man of War Shoal National Marine Park

The Man of War Shoal National Marine Park is a marine protected area located off the southern coast of the Dutch side of the Caribbean island of St. Martin, in the territory of Sint Maarten. Established in December 2010, it is the first and only specially protected nature area in Sint Maarten, and since 2014 it has also been recognized under the SPAW Protocol of the United Nations for specially protected areas and wildlife in the wider Caribbean region. The park covers roughly 3,100 hectares of coastal sea at the edge of the Anguilla Bank, an undersea plateau with depths of up to around 36 meters. It centers on a shallow area known as Man of War Shoal, where a network of patch reefs, seagrass beds, sandy bottom habitats, and open-water environments create a diverse and largely intact Caribbean marine ecosystem. The site is also closely associated with the wreck of the British frigate HMS Proselyte, which sank there in 1801 and remains a popular dive destination. The park is significant both ecologically and as a tool for marine conservation in Sint Maarten. It protects coral reef structures, endangered marine species, sea turtle habitat, and key foraging and migration corridors for open-sea fish, whales, and dolphins. Managed by the Nature Foundation Sint Maarten, it employs around 40 local park rangers and serves as a focal point for marine research, education, and sustainable dive tourism in the region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
