Mikhaylovsky Zakaznik

Mikhaylovsky Zakaznik is a state-run zoological sanctuary (zakaznik) located in the Karabalyk district of Kostanay Oblast in northern Kazakhstan. Established in 1967, it covers a large landscape of birch, aspen, and pine woodlands interspersed with steppe, set within the broader forest-steppe belt that characterises much of the Kazakh-Russian borderlands. The reserve was created specifically to conserve the region's game and furbearing species, with particular emphasis on boreal (taiga-type) game birds and ungulates. Over time it was upgraded from a time-limited oblast-level refuge to an indefinite-status national (republican) zoological reserve, reflecting its long-term importance for Kazakhstan's wildlife heritage. Today it functions as a low-profile but ecologically significant protected territory: a stronghold for native deer, elk, wolves, and a variety of woodland and wetland birds, several of which are listed in Kazakhstan's Red Data Book.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
