Mount Hyland Nature Reserve

Mount Hyland Nature Reserve is a protected nature reserve in the New England region of New South Wales, in eastern Australia. It lies roughly 35 kilometres west of Dorrigo, covering a 2,519-hectare tract of highland country dominated by a triple-peaked mountain that rises about 400 metres above the surrounding plateau and reaches 1,434 metres at its highest point. The reserve belongs to the New England Group of the Gondwana Rainforests of Australia, a UNESCO World Heritage site inscribed in 1986 and later added to the Australian National Heritage List in 2007. Its temperate rainforest is a remnant of the ancient Gondwanan forests that once covered much of the continent, and although the stand here lacks Antarctic beech, it is dominated by common sassafras and other characteristic Gondwanan species. Mount Hyland is also recognised as a remote hotspot of biodiversity and was the site of remarkable rediscovery events in the early 1980s, including the rediscovery of the Hastings River mouse and a rare pouched frog, both of which had been believed extinct. The combination of high-elevation terrain, ancient rainforest, and threatened fauna gives the reserve a distinctive scientific and conservation profile.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
