Native Gap Conservation Reserve

Native Gap Conservation Reserve is a small protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia, situated along the Stuart Highway roughly 115 kilometres north of Alice Springs in the arid heart of central Australia. The reserve covers only about 11 hectares and is built around a 30-metre sandstone ridge rising above the surrounding Burt Plain, where a natural gap in the Hann Range once held a traditional water source. Although modest in scale, the site carries strong cultural weight for the Arrente and Anmatyerr peoples, the traditional owners of the area. It lies at the junction of several Aboriginal creation stories and is officially classified as IUCN Category V, meaning a protected landscape recognised for both its natural and cultural values rather than a strict wilderness reserve. The reserve combines arid-zone flora and fauna with deep historical resonance: the name itself dates to 1872, when workers on the Overland Telegraph Line reported a 'native well' in the gap. Native Gap today exists as much as a cultural and ecological reference point in the central Australian landscape as it does a destination for visitors.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
