Parque nacional Arequita

Parque nacional Arequita is a recently designated protected natural area in the Lavalleja department of southeastern Uruguay. It is defined by Cerro Arequita, a prominent volcanic hill that rises above the surrounding sierras and gives the park both its name and its most recognizable landmark. The park also encompasses the neighboring Cerro del Cuervo and a varied mosaic of native ecosystems that together represent an important slice of Uruguay's interior hill country. The protected landscape combines rocky outcrops, native woodland, open grasslands, and freshwater systems linked to the Santa Lucía river basin, a watershed that supplies drinking water to much of the country. The combination of singular geology, biological diversity, and its position within a strategic watershed gives the park significance well beyond its relatively compact footprint. Although only formally established as a national park in late 2024, Arequita had long been recognized locally for its scenic and geological value, particularly the well known caves of the cerro. Today it stands as one of Uruguay's newest national parks and as a focal point for conservation, sustainable tourism, and environmental education in the Lavalleja region.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
