A coastal protected area in eastern Uruguay uniting wetlands, native forest, grassland, and Atlantic shoreline around the Laguna Negra lagoon.

Parque Nacional Laguna Negra

Parque Nacional Laguna Negra is a recently established protected area in the Rocha department of eastern Uruguay. Officially created in February 2025, the park centers on the Laguna Negra lagoon and the Potrerillo de Santa Teresa biological station, and it also incorporates the northern portion of Parque Nacional Santa Teresa lying north of Route 9. The landscape of the park is shaped by four main environments: coastal wetlands dominated by dense stands of paja and espadaña, native grasslands and palm savannas, small pockets of indigenous monte forest, and a narrow Atlantic sandy shoreline. Together these habitats support a rich mix of resident and migratory species, while also preserving the basin that feeds Laguna Negra itself. The park strengthens Uruguay's network of protected wetlands along the Atlantic coast and reinforces the conservation corridor adjacent to the older Santa Teresa reserve. It is administered as part of the country's National System of Protected Areas under the Ministry of Environment.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
