Poleski National Park

Poleski National Park lies in the Lubelskie Voivodeship of eastern Poland, in the Polish part of the historic Polesie region, on the flat and waterlogged Równina Łęczyńsko-Włodawska. Established in 1990, the park preserves a remarkably intact complex of peatlands, marshes, kettle lakes and lowland forests that has developed largely without human interference since the retreat of the last ice age. The park's defining character is glacial-relict wetland. Sphagnum bogs, transitional fens, marshy birch forests and dystrophic lakes form one of the most valuable wetland systems in Central Europe, recognized internationally as a Ramsar site and forming part of the transboundary West Polesie Biosphere Reserve. The crane, the park's symbol, breeds here in significant numbers, alongside many other rare waterbirds, amphibians and mammals. Beyond its ecological value, Poleski National Park is an important stronghold for relict species that survived the glacial period in the very north and still hang on in this corner of Poland. The combination of open peatlands, standing waters and patchy woodland creates a landscape strikingly reminiscent of the taiga and tundra, making the park a landmark area for understanding postglacial natural history in Europe.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
