Rainbow Lake Wilderness

Rainbow Lake Wilderness is a roughly 7,135-acre federally designated wilderness area in northern Wisconsin, lying entirely within Bayfield County. It sits inside the Chequamegon unit of the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest and is managed by the United States Forest Service as an IUCN Category Ib protected landscape, meaning its primary purpose is the long-term preservation of its natural character and ecological processes. The wilderness is essentially a lake-and-forest mosaic. Rainbow Lake itself is joined by about fifteen other lakes and nine small ponds, many of them accessible only along former logging trails and rail grades that now serve as footpaths. Its heavily wooded landscape combines northern hardwoods, balsam fir, pine, and paper birch, and significant portions qualify as old-growth forest, lending the area a quiet, deeply forested feel typical of the upper Great Lakes region. Visitors come to the Rainbow Lake Wilderness for low-impact recreation, especially fishing, hiking, and backcountry camping. Although the area is small by wilderness standards and is fully encircled by Forest Service roads, it functions as a meaningful pocket of preserved northern forest and serves as a quiet counterpart to the broader Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest surrounding it.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
