Réserve naturelle nationale du val de Loire

The Réserve naturelle nationale du val de Loire is a French national nature reserve that protects a nineteen-kilometer stretch of the Loire between the Cher and Nièvre departments, spanning the Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and Centre-Val de Loire regions. Created by decree in 1995, it was established to safeguard what is widely regarded as the most representative segment of the middle Loire, the roughly four hundred fifty kilometers of river running between Nevers and Angers, characterized by an unusually active fluvial dynamic. The reserve stands out because it preserves a truly free-flowing river landscape. The Loire here is recognized as one of the last relatively wild rivers in Europe, sculpting banks, multiplying side channels, and shifting mobile sandbanks and islands over time. This constant reshaping produces a mosaic of gravel bars, dry grasslands, willow and poplar floodplain forest, and calm backwaters that together shelter more than six hundred plant species and over two hundred bird species. Beyond its ecological role, the reserve is also a place where riverside communities have long coexisted with the river. Towns such as La Charité-sur-Loire, Pouilly-sur-Loire, and Tracy-sur-Loire border the protected corridor, while walking paths along the banks connect visitors to a landscape that remains shaped above all by the natural rhythm of the Loire.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
