Ruby Gap Nature Park

Ruby Gap Nature Park is a protected area in the Northern Territory of Australia, covering a rugged stretch of country in the dry heart of Central Australia. The park lies along the Hale River, roughly 150 kilometres east of Alice Springs, and is reached through the nearby Arltunga Historical Reserve. Its dramatic gorge scenery features layered cliff lines and a granite-studded riverbed that gave the place its evocative name. The park is best known for Central Australia's first mining rush, which began in 1886 when explorer David Lindsay reported finding what he believed to be rubies in the Hale River bed. Within two years, hundreds of prospectors had arrived, only for the gems to be formally identified as high quality garnets rather than rubies. This reassessment collapsed the speculative boom almost overnight and left the area with a layered cultural and historical landscape that still defines it today. Beyond its mining history, Ruby Gap is significant as part of the traditional Country of the Eastern Arrernte people, whose association with the land long predates European arrival. Today the park functions as a quiet, arid-land wilderness area where visitors can explore the gorge landscapes, walk to historically significant sites such as the Fox grave, and gain a rare sense of remote Central Australian country.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
