Salins de Frontignan

Salins de Frontignan is a protected coastal wetland site located on the Gulf of Lion in the Hérault department of southern France, just northeast of Sète and southwest of Montpellier. The site lies on former salt-making marshlands that have been abandoned since the late twentieth century and are now returning to a more natural state. Bordered to the north by the rugged Massif de la Gardiole and to the south by the Étang d'Ingril lagoon, the area forms a transitional landscape between mountain, lagoon, and Mediterranean shoreline. The site is recognized for its mosaic of saline habitats, including salt steppes known as sansouires, reedbeds, shallow evaporation basins, and old salt-harvesting canals. Acquired by the Conservatoire du littoral and managed by Thau agglo, the area is valued less for its industrial past than for the rich ecological character that has reclaimed the abandoned saltworks. It functions today as a small but ecologically meaningful nature reserve within a heavily developed coastal stretch of the Languedoc coast. Salins de Frontignan is particularly notable for its botanical richness, hosting hundreds of plant species adapted to alternating wet and dry conditions and to high salinity, several of which are nationally protected. The site illustrates how former industrial landscapes on the Mediterranean coast can shift over time into valuable habitats for halophytic flora and lagoon-associated wildlife.

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.
