Sanctuaire Agoa

Sanctuaire Agoa is a large French marine protected area in the Caribbean, dedicated to the conservation of marine mammals. It was established on 5 October 2010 in Montego Bay, Jamaica, during the annual meeting of the International Whaling Commission, and it represents one of only three sanctuaries formally recognized by that body, alongside the Southern Ocean and Indian Ocean whale sanctuaries. The sanctuary covers roughly 143,000 square kilometers of ocean and corresponds to the entire Exclusive Economic Zone of the French Antilles, surrounding Guadeloupe, Martinique, Saint-Martin, and Saint-Barthélemy. Its name comes from "Maï d'Agoa," the mother of the spirit of waters in Amerindian mythology, reflecting a cultural framing that connects the protected area with the indigenous heritage of the region. Beyond its symbolic and political role, Sanctuaire Agoa is a practical conservation instrument focused on the study, governance, and protection of cetaceans and other marine mammals. It serves as a platform for scientific campaigns, regional cooperation with neighboring Caribbean states, and the development of responsible whale-watching ecotourism.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
