Sessa Orchid Sanctuary

Sessa Orchid Sanctuary is a protected area in the Himalayan foothills of West Kameng District, Arunachal Pradesh, in northeastern India. Covering roughly 100 square kilometers within the Bhalukpong Forest Division, it forms the northeastern quadrant of a broader landscape that is conjoined with Eaglenest Wildlife Sanctuary and is part of the Kameng Protected Area Complex, a recognized elephant reserve. The sanctuary protects a steep, mountainous tract of closed-canopy forest that rises from around 900 metres to more than 3,200 metres in elevation, with deep gorges, high ridges, and rugged terrain traversed by streams that drain into the Kameng River system. The sanctuary is best known for its extraordinary orchid richness, with more than 200 recorded orchid species, including several new and endemic taxa, and a distinctive assemblage of saprotrophic orchids. Its ecological significance is reinforced by broader recognition, including its position within the Himalaya Biodiversity Hotspot and its joint designation, with Eaglenest, as an Important Bird Area for vulnerable species such as Blyth's tragopan. The cultural landscape is shaped by the long-standing territorial claims and presence of the Bugun community, while the sanctuary's modern identity is closely tied to the Orchid Research and Development Centre established nearby at Tipi.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
