Shantar Islands National Park

Shantar Islands National Park encompasses a chain of 15 uninhabited islands situated in the Sea of Okhotsk off the coast of Khabarovsk Krai in the Russian Far East. The park covers both terrestrial and maritime environments, spanning approximately 515,500 hectares with about 274,000 hectares being marine waters. Established as a national park in 2013, the area was previously protected as a state nature reserve since 1999. The islands lie in the Tuguro-Chumikansky District and are administered by the Russian Ministry of Natural Resources through FGBU Shantar Islands. The archipelago features rugged mountainous terrain with elevations reaching 720 meters, characterized by dramatic cliffs and rocky shorelines. Bolshoy Shantar Island dominates the group, accounting for roughly three-quarters of the terrestrial area, while Feklistova Island represents the second-largest landmass. The islands sit within Uda Bay, which once connected to the mainland until 9,000-10,000 years ago, explaining the absence of endemic plant species despite the islands' ecological richness. The surrounding marine environment constitutes one of the most significant protected coastal ecosystems in the Russian Far East, supporting extraordinary concentrations of marine mammals and seabird colonies.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate
