Tajzara

Tajzara is a lake and wetland system set on the arid Bolivian Altiplano, in an intermontane basin on the arid high plain of the Andes near the Cordillera de Sama. Located within the Tarija Department, in the province of José María Avilés, it lies at elevations between roughly 3700 and 3800 meters above sea level and includes permanent lakes such as Pujzara, Laguna Grande, and Laguna Chica, alongside a series of smaller seasonal pools that expand and contract with rainfall. Because of the harsh, dry climate of the surrounding plateau, these shallow saline lakes and their associated marshes concentrate exceptional biological value. The basin was recognized as a Ramsar wetland of international importance in 1999, reflecting its significance for migratory waders and resident high-Andean waterbirds. Its brackish waters, silty beds, and seasonal dynamics make it one of the most important wetland refuges in the Bolivian highlands.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
