Wasserwerk Johannisthal

Wasserwerk Johannisthal is a nature reserve in the Berlin district of Treptow-Köpenick, covering roughly 35 hectares around a historic drinking water supply site. Officially designated as a protected area in 2007, it sits within an urban setting where the boundaries are clearly defined by surrounding roads, allotment gardens, and the Bundesautobahn 113 corridor. The site began its modern history in 1901, when a waterworks was commissioned along with two lift lines drawing water from the Spree, the Dahme, the Britzer Verbindungskanal, and the Teltowkanal. Over the following decades the facility expanded through additional pumping wells and, by the 1970s, was supplying hundreds of thousands of Berliners with drinking water. After German reunification the demand for drinking water dropped sharply, and active extraction at the site ceased in 2001. Although plans exist to reactivate part of the infrastructure, the reserve today primarily functions as a safeguarded groundwater area where contaminant remediation and the maintenance of stable urban water levels are the dominant concerns.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
