Whakanewha Regional Park

Whakanewha Regional Park is a regional park situated on the southern coast of central Waiheke Island, in the Hauraki Gulf of New Zealand's Auckland Region. Owned and operated by Auckland Council, the park extends from the central ridgeline of the island down toward Rocky Bay, also known as Whakanewha Bay, and includes the catchments of three streams that flow into the bay. The landscape is defined by a mosaic of regenerating native shrublands, mature broadleaf and podocarp forest, and a substantial freshwater wetland in the south-west of the park. These habitats support rare native birds such as the New Zealand bittern, banded rail, and fernbird, giving the park real ecological value within an island setting that is otherwise shaped by human settlement. Beyond its natural character, Whakanewha carries a deep Māori heritage, with historic pā sites and shell middens reflecting long-term Tāmaki Māori occupation. After passing through phases of nineteenth-century farming and twentieth-century regeneration, the park was formally opened as a public regional park in 2007 and now serves as one of Waiheke Island's principal natural reserves.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
