Zhanazhol Pine Forest

Zhanazhol Pine Forest is a protected natural monument of republican significance in northern Kazakhstan, located in the Zhambyl district of North Kazakhstan Region. The site consists of a small, relict stand of Scots pine growing in the kolok (small grove) form typical of the regional forest-steppe, on sandy-silty deposits of continental Oligocene age between the Ishim and Tobol river basins. Though it covers only a few hectares, the pine grove is ecologically remarkable because it lies far outside the main pine-forest belt of Kazakhstan, surviving in a physical-geographic zone that is normally too dry for Scots pine. The forest is dominated by mature pines of around 110 years of age, with a typical boreal ground flora of lichens, ferns, and forest herbs beneath a continuous carpet of slowly decomposing needle litter. The grove is part of the broader Zhanazhol protected natural area and is valued primarily for its scientific and conservation significance rather than for visitor infrastructure, reflecting its isolated location away from major settlements.

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
