Agnes Banks Natural Area

Agnes Banks Natural Area is a heritage-listed natural sand deposit, fauna habitat and native flora site located in the western Sydney suburb of Agnes Banks, in the City of Penrith, New South Wales, Australia. The property sits at the edge of the Cumberland Plain, where deep, well-drained inland sands support plant communities more commonly associated with coastal dune systems than with the surrounding clay-dominated landscape. Geologically, the sands are an ancient deposit of Pliocene to Pleistocene age, originally shed from Blue Mountains sandstone and later reworked by wind. Ecologically, the deposit is exceptional for its isolation: more than 50 kilometres from the present coast, it still carries vegetation with strong affinities to coastal sand-dune flora and to Hawkesbury sandstone plant communities. The site is recognised for its scientific, aesthetic and environmental heritage value and has been listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register since 1999. Alongside the adjoining Agnes Banks Nature Reserve, proclaimed in 1982, the Natural Area forms one of the most important remnants of inland sand vegetation in the Sydney region. It is regarded as a key reference site for understanding past climates, sand-dune ecology, and the evolutionary relationship between inland and coastal flora in southeastern Australia.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
