Amana Nature Reserve

Amana Nature Reserve is a protected coastal area in the overseas department of French Guiana, France, located in the northern part of South America along the Atlantic Ocean. The reserve encompasses approximately 148 square kilometers of diverse habitats including beaches, mangrove forests, swamps, and savannas, stretching from the Maroni River to the Organobo River. Established on March 13, 1998, the reserve is managed by the Regional Natural Park of French Guiana and occupies territory within the communes of Awala-Yalimapo and Mana. The reserve holds exceptional international significance as one of the world's most important nesting sites for leatherback sea turtles, a vulnerable species with very specific habitat requirements. The beaches at Amana have supported between 5,029 and 63,294 turtle nests annually over a nearly four-decade period, making it a critical conservation area for this endangered marine reptile. Beyond its turtle nesting significance, the reserve has been designated an Important Bird Area by BirdLife International due to its remarkable avifauna diversity, with 319 species recorded including significant populations of migratory waders and other waterbirds.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
