A vast Mexican watershed reserve spanning the southern Sierra Madre Occidental and the western Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt.

Cuenca Alimentadora del Distrito Nacional de Riego 043 Estado de Nayarit

Cuenca Alimentadora del Distrito Nacional de Riego 043 Estado de Nayarit is one of the largest protected natural areas in Mexico, covering more than 2.3 million hectares across the west-central part of the country. The reserve stretches across portions of five states, including southern Durango, northern Jalisco, eastern Nayarit, southern Zacatecas, and western Aguascalientes, straddling major segments of the southern Sierra Madre Occidental and the western edge of the Trans-Mexican Volcanic Belt. The protected area is not a single contiguous block but a mosaic of isolated parcels set on north to south mountain ridges, separated by broad river valleys that drain toward the Pacific. Its designation reflects its primary function: safeguarding the watershed that supplies Irrigation District 043 in Nayarit. Beyond water provision, the reserve conserves extensive pine and oak forest ecosystems, dry forest corridors along river valleys, and high-elevation grasslands that support diverse and partly endemic flora and fauna. Designated originally as a protected forest area and watershed in 1949 and redesignated as a Natural Resources Protection Area in 2002, the reserve represents an early and enduring effort to integrate forest conservation with sustainable resource use across one of Mexico's most topographically complex regions. Its administration falls under Mexico's National Commission of Natural Protected Areas.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
