East Karbi Anglong Wildlife Sanctuary

East Karbi Anglong Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected forest reserve in the Karbi Anglong district of Assam in northeastern India. It lies roughly 35 kilometers from the district town of Diphu, within a landscape of low to mid-elevation hills that fall within a larger chain of forested uplands connecting central Assam to the Mikir Hills region. The sanctuary covers an area of about 222 square kilometers and ranges from approximately 80 meters to around 500 meters above sea level. Its terrain combines hill slopes, valleys, and streams that support mixed deciduous and evergreen vegetation, creating the habitat conditions favored by large mammals, primates, reptiles, and a remarkable diversity of birds. East Karbi Anglong was declared a wildlife sanctuary on 27 July 2000. It is classified as an IUCN Category IV protected area, recognizing its role as a habitat and species management area rather than a strictly untouched wilderness reserve, and it remains an important refuge for species that depend on the central Assam hill forests.
