Gwennap Head

Gwennap Head is a rugged granite headland on the southern coast of the Penwith peninsula in Cornwall, England, lying only a few miles from the western tip of the British mainland. The cliffs, sea stacks, and exposed coves are part of the Penwith Heritage Coast and the Cornwall Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, and the headland is crossed by the South West Coast Path. Its older and more locally rooted name, Tol-Pedn-Penwith, refers to a striking blowhole that pierces the cliff down to a sea cave beneath the headland. The site is well known among naturalists and birdwatchers for its concentration of passage seabirds and occasional pelagic rarities, drawn past the headland by the productive waters of the Runnel Stone reef. At the same time, the headland carries a strong maritime heritage: it hosts a long-running watch station now run by the National Coastwatch Institution, historic daymarks warning ships of the Runnel Stone hazard, and a coastline marked by nineteenth- and early twentieth-century wrecks. Together, these features make Gwennap Head a compact but unusually rich combination of coastal scenery, wildlife observation, and seafaring history.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
