Kahurangi Marine Reserve

Kahurangi Marine Reserve is a New Zealand marine reserve administered by the Department of Conservation, covering 8,419 hectares of territorial waters along the remote northwestern coastline of the South Island. It lies offshore of Kahurangi National Park in the Buller District, extending roughly 16 kilometres of shoreline between Wekakura Point and Crayfish Point, and reaching five kilometres out to sea. The reserve protects a contiguous belt of coastal and inshore marine habitat, from boulder-strewn sandy beaches backed by nīkau forest through to rocky reefs, seastacks, and subtidal seabed of mud and sand reaching depths of around 50 metres. It is one of the larger marine reserves in New Zealand and owes much of its character to its wild, lightly visited setting on the West Coast. Its ecological value comes from this combination of shoreline, reef, and seabed environments in close succession. The reserve shelters encrusting reef communities, burrowing shellfish, and a range of inshore fish species, while the beaches and cliffs above the waterline support seal colonies, Hector's dolphins, and a distinctive driftwood shoreline fauna.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
