Kārewa / Gannet Island

Kārewa / Gannet Island is a small uninhabited island lying roughly 19 kilometres offshore from Kawhia, on the west coast of New Zealand's North Island. It is the eroded remnant of a tuff ring erupted around half a million years ago, rising modestly above the surrounding sea on the eastern edge of the North Taranaki Graben. Despite its compact size and exposure to heavy ocean swells, the island has become one of New Zealand's most significant seabird sites. Protected as a wildlife sanctuary, Kārewa is best known for its enormous Australasian gannet breeding colony, which in a 1980 census was the country's largest single colony of the species, holding about 8000 breeding pairs. BirdLife International has identified the island as an Important Bird Area in recognition of its exceptional ornithological value. Beyond its birdlife, the island is geologically distinctive: it is younger than and compositionally different from the nearby onshore Alexandra and Okete volcanic groups, making it a small but scientifically interesting piece of New Zealand's volcanic heritage.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
