Kingmere Marine Conservation Zone

Kingmere Marine Conservation Zone is an offshore protected marine area in the English Channel, lying a few miles south of the West Sussex coastline between Littlehampton and Worthing. It covers roughly 47 square kilometres of seafloor that includes rocky reefs, chalk outcrops, and unusual underwater chalk cliff features known as the Worthing Lumps. The zone was designated in November 2013 as part of England's network of Marine Conservation Zones, with management responsibilities falling to the Sussex Inshore Fisheries and Conservation Authority. It protects two pre-existing Sites of Nature Conservation Interest: Kingmere Rocks, off Littlehampton, and the Worthing Lumps, off Worthing, both of which have strong ecological value for seabed habitats and associated fish communities. Kingmere is best known for its role as one of the United Kingdom's most important spawning areas for black seabream and for its chalk reef features, which have been described by the Marine Conservation Society as among the finest chalk reefs in Europe. The combination of rocky reef and chalk topography makes it a distinctive and scientifically important site within the Sussex Channel ecosystem.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
