Kora National Park

Kora National Park is a remote protected area in eastern Kenya, spanning approximately 1,788 square kilometers along the Tana River in Tana River County. The park sits about 125 kilometers east of Mount Kenya and features a distinctive landscape characterized by gently undulating terrain punctuated by dramatic rocky inselbergs that rise abruptly from the surrounding peneplain. Originally established as a nature reserve in 1973, the area was upgraded to national park status in 1989, a transformation marked by the tragic murder of renowned lion conservationist George Adamson by poachers that same year. The park's ecological character is defined by acacia bushland interspersed with riverine forests along the Tana River, supporting a diverse array of wildlife including elephants, lions, leopards, and numerous antelope species. Despite its ecological significance, Kora has faced significant conservation challenges, particularly during the 1980s and 1990s when poaching decimated wildlife populations and claimed the lives of Adamson and his assistants.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
