Macun-Seen

The Macun-Seen are a remote high-alpine lake plateau in the Lower Engadine region of the Swiss canton of Graubünden. Known in Romansh as Lais da Macun, the area consists of 23 small cirque lakes set on a broad platform at roughly 2600 metres above sea level, with the largest basin, Lai Grond, reaching about 1.5 hectares in surface area and 8.5 metres in depth. Since August 2000, the plateau has been administered as an exclave of the Swiss National Park, separated from the main park area by the Val Laschadura. This protected status means that all plants within the area are fully protected and visitors are required to stay on marked trails, leaving the landscape largely untouched by infrastructure. Despite its small size, the Macun-Seen are ecologically distinctive because their crystalline silicate bedrock supports a different flora from the surrounding dolomite regions of the Lower Engadine. The plateau is also valued for its accessible views of wildlife, including ibex, chamois, marmots, and breeding ptarmigan.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
