Moisés Bertoni Scientific Monument

The Moisés Bertoni Scientific Monument is a protected natural area, museum, and historic site in the Alto Paraná Department of eastern Paraguay, near the city of Presidente Franco along the Paraná River. The reserve covers 199 hectares of remnant Atlantic Forest and preserves the former residence and research station of Moisés Santiago Bertoni, a Swiss-born naturalist who settled in Paraguay in the late 19th century. Bertoni used the property as a working laboratory and library, conducting research in botany, zoology, meteorology, and anthropology, often in collaboration with members of the local Guaraní community. Today the site combines ecological conservation with cultural heritage, protecting native trees such as Araucaria angustifolia and Euterpe edulis while also functioning as a museum that preserves Bertoni's manuscripts, personal objects, and historic buildings. The monument holds a distinctive place in Paraguay's protected-area network because it links a nationally significant conservation zone in the Upper Paraná Atlantic Forest with the legacy of one of the country's most influential naturalists. Visitors reach the site, locally known as Puerto Bertoni, primarily through river excursions along the Paraná, and the reserve remains home to indigenous Mbya communities who have lived within its boundaries for generations.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
