Nahá-Metzabok Flora and Fauna Protection Area

The Nahá-Metzabok Flora and Fauna Protection Area is a Mexican protected area composed of two distinct reserves, Metzabok and Nahá, located in the Lacandon Jungle in the eastern part of the state of Chiapas. Both reserves were officially decreed on 23 September 1998 and together form one of Mexico's 39 flora and fauna protection areas, a category dedicated to conserving ecosystems, flora, and fauna rather than allowing intensive human use. The combined area lies within the municipality of Ocosingo, a humid tropical region where dense rainforest, lakes, rivers, caves, and rugged terrain create a mosaic of habitats. The reserves are home to hundreds of plant and animal species, including a significant number classified at risk under Mexican environmental standards. In 2010, Nahá-Metzabok was incorporated into UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves, reinforcing its international recognition as a region of outstanding ecological and cultural value. The area is closely tied to indigenous Lacandon communities, whose presence and traditional relationship with the forest give the reserves a strong cultural dimension alongside their conservation role.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
