Parque Municipal y Área Natural de Manejo Integrado Gran Mojos

Parque Municipal y Área Natural de Manejo Integrado Gran Mojos is a large protected area in the Beni Department of Bolivia, within the municipality of Loreto in the province of Marbán. Spanning roughly 580,430 hectares, it covers about 95 percent of the municipal territory and lies in the floodplain of the central Mamoré River, one of the defining river systems of the Llanos de Moxos ecoregion. The area is structured around two complementary designations: a core Parque Municipal zone preserving primary forest, and a broader Área Natural de Manejo Integrado (ANMI) where approximately fourteen indigenous communities live alongside the protected habitats. This combination reflects both conservation goals and the recognition of long-standing human presence in the floodplain landscape. Gran Mojos is most notable for hosting what is considered the largest known nesting area of the Blue-throated Macaw (Ara glaucogularis), a species endemic to Bolivia and classified as critically endangered. The protected area was created in 2017 specifically to address threats to this macaw as well as to other threatened species such as the Amazon river dolphin (bufeo) and the jaguar.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
