Pico Codazzi Natural Monument

Pico Codazzi Natural Monument is a protected natural area situated in the state of Aragua, in northern Venezuela. It was established in 1991 as a connective corridor between Henri Pittier National Park and Macarao National Park, two of the most important protected areas of the central Coastal Range. The monument covers roughly 11,850 hectares of rugged mountain terrain and includes one of the highest summits of the Cordillera de la Costa, a mountain system that runs parallel to the Venezuelan Caribbean coast. The defining feature of the park is Pico Codazzi itself, also known as El Picacho, a steep peak with reported elevations ranging between approximately 1,818 and 2,429 meters. Its slopes and ridgelines are marked by limestone massifs, deeply cut caves carved by seasonal torrents, vertical cliffs, and small streams that drain into the surrounding valleys. The protected area plays a complementary role to the larger national parks it links, preserving a transitional mountain landscape where cloud forest vegetation, karst formations, and seasonal bird migrations converge. From a biodiversity standpoint, the monument is valued less as a standalone refuge and more as a critical ecological bridge. It sits at the meeting point of forested slopes that descend toward the Caribbean and the higher cloud forests of the Coastal Range, and it carries a portion of one of the richest avian corridors in Venezuela. Together with Henri Pittier, it forms a protected mountain continuum that supports both resident wildlife and seasonal migrations.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
