A Himalayan reservoir turned Ramsar wetland and winter haven for migratory birds

Pong Dam Lake

Pong Dam Lake, officially known as Maharana Pratap Sagar, is a large reservoir in Kangra district of Himachal Pradesh, India, created in 1975 when the highest earthfill dam in India at that time was built across the Beas River in the wetland zone of the Siwalik Hills. The reservoir spreads across a broad catch in the lower western Himalayas, ringed by the Dhauladhar range on one side and the low foothills falling toward the Indo-Gangetic plains on the other, giving it a transitional landscape between mountain and plain that is unusual among large Indian reservoirs. The lake is internationally recognized as a Ramsar wetland site and is managed as a wildlife sanctuary, particularly famous for its enormous influx of migratory waterfowl each winter. Tens of thousands of ducks, geese, storks, grebes, and shorebirds arrive from the trans-Himalayan flyway, including species that travel from Central Asia and Siberia, turning the reservoir into one of the most important waterfowl refuges in northern India. Beyond its ecological role, Pong Dam Lake supplies irrigation and drinking water to multiple northern states, supports the region's most productive inland fisheries in the Himalayan foothills, and hosts a water sports centre on its shores. It also conceals the seasonally emerging Bathu Temples, lending the landscape a layered blend of engineering scale, biodiversity, and cultural memory.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
