Mont des Avaloirs Regional Nature Reserve

The Mont des Avaloirs Regional Nature Reserve is a French regional nature reserve (réserve naturelle régionale) located in the Mayenne department of the Pays de la Loire region. Classified on 25 September 2020, it covers approximately 321 hectares around the Mont des Avaloirs, the highest summit of the Armorican Massif and one of the iconic high points of northwestern France. The reserve protects a remarkable mosaic of upland habitats for its latitude: extensive heaths broken by rocky scree, two large forest stands in free evolution that host saproxylic species, several peat bog complexes, and bocage landscapes set among valleys and brooks. Its elevation, modest by alpine standards but unusual for the Armorican uplands, gives the area cooler, wetter, and more exposed conditions that support rare and atypical ecological niches. Administered and managed by the Parc naturel régional Normandie-Maine, the reserve has rapidly become a major centre of biodiversity interest in the region. It is extensively covered by Natura 2000 designations, integrates multiple ZNIEFF inventory zones, and includes sensitive natural area (ENS) protections from the Mayenne department.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
