Sierra de Álamos-Río Cuchujaqui Flora and Fauna Protection Area

The Sierra de Álamos-Río Cuchujaqui Flora and Fauna Protection Area is a large protected natural area in the municipality of Álamos, in the southern part of the Mexican state of Sonora. Established on 19 July 1996 and spanning roughly 92,890 hectares, it sits at the transition between the Sierra Madre Occidental and the Northwest Coastal Plain, giving it an unusually steep ecological gradient for northwestern Mexico. The reserve was also incorporated in 2007 into UNESCO's World Network of Biosphere Reserves under the Man and the Biosphere Programme, although within Mexico it retains its official status as a flora and fauna protection area rather than a biosphere reserve. Its setting is defined by the Sierra de Álamos, a coastal-parallel mountain range cut by deep barrancas carved by rivers such as the Cuchujaqui, which flows westward to the Pacific as part of the Río Fuerte watershed. This topography creates a striking altitudinal transition from tropical dry deciduous forest in the lower valleys and foothills up to pine-oak forests of the Sierra Madre at higher elevations, producing one of the most botanically diverse landscapes in Sonora. The area is recognized as a hotspot for biodiversity, hosting more than 2,360 species of plants and animals and 557 vertebrate species. The mix of Sonoran, Sinaloan, and Sierra Madre floral influences has earned the region recognition as one of the richest biodiversity enclaves in the state, with notable populations of iconic wildlife such as jaguar, ocelot, Gila monster, and golden eagle.

Distance methodology

Geographic measurements, not driving distances

How nearby park distances are calculated

Distances use park boundaries whenever the available geometry allows it. When one or both boundaries are missing, the mapped park locations provide a clearly labelled estimate. Every value represents straight-line geographic separation and does not use roads or routing.

Boundary distance

Calculated between the nearest points of both park boundaries.

Location-to-boundary estimate

Estimated from one mapped park location to the nearest boundary of the other park.

Mapped-location estimate

Estimated between the mapped locations of both parks.
